The Importance of North Sea Ports in the Hydrogen Economy

Written on the 3rd February, 2025

North Sea Ports will play a key role in the developing hydrogen economy as producers, importers and users of hydrogen.  This key role will be explored in greater detail at the Fourth North Sea Hydrogen Ports and Maritime Conference.  This One Day Conference will be held in Brussels on 27 February.

The Conference will look at a broad range of issues and there will be keynote speeches from three senior Commission officials.  A major topic for discussion is the way in which Hydrogen Corridors will develop and the role of ports in them.  The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance (ECHA) has published Learnbooks which examine both supply corridors and the financing of hydrogen infrastructure.  Abel Enriquez from Enagas co-chaired the ECHA Roundtable looking at these issues and will make a presentation about the findings in the Learnbooks.

As the EU moves to net zero, the role of ports has been discussed by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the Chair of ESPO’s Energy Committee, Mark Dijk will speak at the event.  Mark is also External Affairs Manager at the Port of Rotterdam and at the heart of the port’s plans and strategies to produce and import hydrogen. It is an excellent case study for developing port hydrogen strategies.

The development of a hydrogen market will be an important element in a North Sea Hydrogen Corridor and the scene at the EU level will be set by Tudor Constantinescu, the Principal Adviser Energy Director General  in the European Commission.  H2-Global has been set up to assist in the development of the hydrogen market, particularly through hydrogen auctions and Markus Exenberger will speak at the Conference.  David Haverbeke from Fieldfishers Lawyers will outline the legal requirements for taking part in the evolving hydrogen market.
