SCOTLAND-NORTHERN GERMANY HYDROGEN WEBINARS AND VALUE CHAIN PROJECT PIPELINE

In the New Year, European Policy Solutions and NS HyMaP will be holding six webinars aimed at increasing international co-operation between Scotland and Northern Germany which will increase trade flows between the two countries.

In July 2025, the UK Government stated that “While our immediate priority remains establishing the UK hydrogen economy, international collaboration is vital to ensuring the potential of hydrogen is effectively unlocked.” The public and private sectors have also identified the need for co-operation with Memoranda of Understanding being signed at national, regional and local levels.

A Hydrogen Partnership has been formed between the Federal Government of Germany and the UK Government. The two Governments wish to “accelerate the deployment of hydrogen projects; advance research and innovation; and promote hydrogen trade and investment along the value chain.” MoUs between other spheres of government including the Scottish Government and German Länder cover similar areas.

Opportunities have been identified at a regional level. The Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Sector Export Plan emphasises the import needs of Germany by 2030. In the actions section of the Plan, the Scottish Government wishes to “Deepen bi-lateral collaborations with Germany and other key markets to support the development of hydrogen infrastructure and import demand from Scotland and engage in international market mechanisms like Germany’s H2 Global.”

The webinars will be followed by a series of meetings to develop a project pipeline to create a value chain to support hydrogen imports and exports between Scotland and Northern Germany.

Aim of Initiative

To build on strategic reports which outline greater co-operation between Scotland and Northern Germany by developing partnerships and projects which will further research and innovation and create a value chain enabling the import and export of hydrogen between the two territories
