Written on the 12th September, 2022

There is now less than a month to go before the “Hydrogen Strategies and Co-operation in the North Sea Region – The Maritime Dimension” Conference which will be held in Edinburgh on Tuesday 11 October 2022.  The Conference will be held in the CoSLA Conference Centre near Haymarket Station which is one of the mainline rail stations in Edinburgh, The Conference Centre is also on the tramline from Edinburgh Airport to the centre of Edinburgh.

The Conference is organised by the North Sea Hydrogen Ports and Maritime Community (NS HyMaP) and is part of the Maritime UK Week and is sponsored by CMB Tech.   We have an impressive list of speakers who have agreed to speak.  these include representatives from the UK and Scottish Governments and colleagues from around the North Sea Region.   The Conference will also look at projects that have resulted from hydrogen strategies in the North Sea Region.

We have two speakers from the UK Government. Cameron Davies from the Hydrogen Strategy Team in the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Team will speak about the development of the UK Hydrogen Strategy since its launch in August 2021.   The UK’s Department of Transport (DfT) has been very active in the decarbonisation of the ports and maritime sector and defining hydrogen’s role in decarbonisation.  It produced the Maritime 2050 Strategy in 2018 followed by the Clean Maritime Plan the following year.   Natasha Coates, the Head of Maritime Environment Policy in the DfT will outline the UK Government’s Approach to Maritime Decarbonisation and Green Corridors.

The Scottish Government is extremely positive about the potential of hydrogen in its renewable energy mix and has produced first a hydrogen Statement then a Hydrogen Action Plan.  Julia Cramb-Low from the Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Team will present the Scottish Government’s progress on implementing Scotland’s hydrogen policies.

The Conference will also look at co-operation across the North Sea Region and examine both the Esbjerg Declaration and the growing co-operation between Scotland and Germany.
