European Policy Solutions and NS HyMaP are pleased to invite you to our fifth webinar which looks at the role of pipelines in developing links between Scotland and Northern Germany.
Draft Agenda
2.00 Introduction
2.10 “Pipeline Links from Scotland to the European Hydrogen Backbone:” Hayleigh
Barnett, Net Zero Technology Centre.
2.30 “Arup’s Work in Identifying Pipeline Routes Between the United Kingdom and
Germany :” Rob Duffin, Arup
2.50 “ The Aquaventus:” Robert Seehawer, Aquaventus.
3.10 “The European Hydrogen Backbone in Northern Germany and Beyond:” Jan
Caldeira Riechers, Gascade
3.30 Q&A
The movement of hydrogen by pipeline has been a key consideration in the development of co-operation between Scotland and Northern Germany. The Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Export Plan states” The development of hydrogen offshore pipelines offers a strong strategic opportunity to support the large-scale transportation of hydrogen exports from Scotland to north western Europe, given our proximity just 700km away from the Netherlands and 750km from the north German coast. This will assist us to maximise Scotland’s vast potential offshore energy resources by providing an additional route to market through the production of renewable hydrogen.”
The webinar brings together four speakers who have undertaken key work in the development of pipelines. The Net Zero Technology Centre has published a key report on Scotland’s pipeline links to the European Hydrogen Backbone and since then has conducted further research. Hayleigh Barnett from the NZTC will outline this research.
Hayleigh will be followed by Rob Duffin from Arup and he will look at the key work undertaken by Arup. This includes the UK-Germany joint study in the trade of hydrogen. The work was carried out by Arup, Dena and Adelphi and outlines the feasibility of and, steps needed for, potential future pipeline-based hydrogen trade between the UK and Germany. With Gascade, Arup is now carrying out a Feasibility Study looking at a pipeline link between two sites in the UK and Aquaventus.
This will bring us onto the work of Aquaventus which is based in the seas off Heligoland and is one of the largest projects in the North Sea. Its aim is produce large quantities of green hydrogen from offshore wind and, through the Aquaductus project feed in this hydrogen to the European Hydrogen Backbone.
There will also be a presentation from Jan Caldeira Riechers from Gascade who are working with Arup on the Pipeline Feasibility Study between the UK and Germany. Gascade is a member of the European Hydrogen Backbone The EHB initiative aims to accelerate Europe’s decarbonisation journey by defining the critical role of hydrogen infrastructure – based on existing and new pipelines – in enabling the development of a competitive, liquid, pan-European renewable and low-carbon hydrogen market.
The initiative seeks to foster market competition, security of supply, security of demand, and cross-border collaboration between European countries and their neighbours
